About Kertu
Artist | Painter | Creator of Joyful Abstract Landscapes
Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I cannot recall a time when I wasn’t drawing, painting, or creating something with my hands. My artistic journey began in earnest at the Tallinn Children’s Art School in Estonia, where I studied for four years whilst attending secondary school. Those formative years laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for visual expression.
Following school, I had the opportunity to continue my studies in the United States, graduating with Honours from Montclair State University, New Jersey, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. My love for creativity and learning later led me to complete a Master’s Degree in Art Education at the University of Tartu, Estonia.
Over the past twenty years, I have worked within the fields of Fine Art, Design, Education, and Digital Media across Estonia, Israel, and the United Kingdom. My paintings can be found in private collections, and I have participated in a number of group exhibitions whilst also teaching design and running my own web design business.
Today, my greatest passion lies in creating vibrant abstract paintings in acrylics. I am fascinated by colour, texture, movement, and the emotions they evoke. My work is inspired by the belief that art can transform a space and uplift the spirit. Through expressive layers, bold colour harmonies, and intuitive mark-making, I create paintings that bring energy, dopamine, warmth, and joy into a room. My hope is that each piece becomes a daily source of inspiration and happiness for those who live with it.
Nature is one of my greatest teachers. Long walks through the countryside, observing changing seasons, cloud formations, textures, light, and colour continually inspire my creative process. Often it is not the landscape itself that appears in my work, but the feeling it leaves behind. The calm of a morning walk, the rhythm of wind through trees, or the colours of a sunset become abstract landscapes of memory, emotion, and spirit.
Painting is also a deeply meditative practice for me. Solitude allows me to enter a state of flow where time disappears and intuition takes over. Sometimes it is music that opens that doorway, sometimes the changing light of the day. In those moments, I feel less like I am controlling the painting and more like I am uncovering something that already exists beneath the surface. The painting develops its own voice, and my role is simply to listen and guide it into being.
Each painting I create is an invitation: to pause, to feel, to reconnect with joy, and to bring more colour, beauty, and possibility into everyday life.
As my children grow into adulthood and begin discovering their own unique creative paths, I find myself entering a new chapter as an artist. This season brings both freedom and inspiration. Watching them develop their talents reminds me that creativity is not only something we practise, but something we pass on through encouragement, curiosity, and love.
“Art is where colour, spirit, and intuition meet. Through abstract painting, I transform emotions, memories, and moments of wonder into vibrant expressions of joy.” – Kertu Laur Kelem
